CONDITION OVERVIEW.
Hemifacial spasm is a movement disorder that causes involuntary facial muscle spasms. These muscle contractions occur when the facial nerve at the brainstem is compressed. This compression is typically caused by a displaced artery or vein pushing on the nerve. While not life-threatening, hemifacial spasm can affect daily life for many patients and inhibit social activities and normal tasks, such as driving or reading. For many patients, treatment options include only symptom management; however, permanent relief is available through microvascular decompression surgery.
