TREATABLE

Hemifacial spasm is rare, affecting only 11 in every 100,000 individuals. With hemifacial spasm’s rarity, few resources are available for patients, and many don’t know there is a permanent treatment option—microvascular decompression surgery. Learn more about this life-changing procedure.

CONDITION OVERVIEW.

Hemifacial spasm is a movement disorder that causes involuntary facial muscle spasms. These muscle contractions occur when the facial nerve at the brainstem is compressed. This compression is typically caused by a displaced artery or vein pushing on the nerve. While not life-threatening, hemifacial spasm can affect daily life for many patients and inhibit social activities and normal tasks, such as driving or reading. For many patients, treatment options include only symptom management; however, permanent relief is available through microvascular decompression surgery. Learn more about hemifacial spasm symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.
